California’s out-of-control wildfires are officially the worst in state history.

While we’re all talking about IQ tests, here’s a math problem: Imagine you’re a tree with 56 apples to take care of. One day, a massive storm comes and knocks out about four of those apples. They’re all on the ground now, kind of smushed.

But one of those apples didn’t have the same advantages as the other ones — too many pesticides growing up, let’s say — and it’s extra-smushed. It is also $74 billion in debt. (You may ask: Who loaned an apple $74 billion? Hedge funds have long embraced predatory lending practices, but that’s a math problem for another time.)

Anyway — as the tree, it’s your job to get those apples back in shape. You decide to allocate $36.5 billion in fallen-apple assistance. But only $5 billion specifically goes to that extra-smushed, indebted apple, and then that apple has to pay it back. It has to share about $14 billion with the other less-indebted and -smushed apples.

Surprise! This isn’t really a math problem — it’s an ethics problem. The tree is the United States government, the apples are all of its states and territories, the smushed apples are Florida, Texas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the extra-smushed apple is Puerto Rico. Donald Trump’s self-lauded aid plan for the ailing and indebted territory is a loan.

Camera Collection Update

I have a new camera, so that means I need to update my camera gallery. This time I took a family photo, and then practiced my Photoshop skillz by erasing the background so they all look like they’re floating in air. I’m really bad at this kind of thing because I can’t draw a straight line with a mouse to save my life. So it was good practice even if it was kind of tedious.

Anyway, here it is: 80 years of Drum family cameras. More details in this old post if you’re curious about them.

In New Poll, Clinton Leads Trump In Every Single Category

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The latest WaPo/ABC News poll shows Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump 51-43 percent in a two-way race. That’s good news for Clinton, but the rest of the poll is even better news. Asked who they believe will win, Clinton leads by a whopping 58-29 percent. Historically, this is a pretty predictive indicator. President Obama’s approval rating is up to 58 percent, which is good news for the candidate of the same party. Clinton also leads on all four questions about character and all five questions about issues.

But here’s my favorite result. Although 43 percent of respondents say they support Trump, only 36 percent say he’s qualified to serve. This means that 7 percent of the population plans to vote for him even though they think he’s unqualified to be president. Boo yah!

Anyway, margin of error, question wording, blah blah blah. This probably doesn’t really mean much. But it’s amusing nonetheless.

BREAKING: Donald Trump Avoids Imploding For Two Days!

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Here’s the front page of the LA Times this morning. I have to say I’m impressed. Donald Trump gets a huge headline in the lead spot for spending—what? Two days? Maybe three? Anyway, two or three days without doing anything egregiously idiotic. It’s like the way we lavish praise on a two-year-old for not throwing his food all over the kitchen.

According to the story itself, Trump gave a good speech! He ran some TV ads! He visited Baton Rouge for 49 seconds! The first was plainly aimed at his white base, not at the African-Americans it was putatively meant for. The second is the bare minimum that any presidential campaign is expected to do. And the third was transparent hucksterism. Still, he managed to avoid imploding the entire time. Good boy, Donald!

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward Prove That True Love Is Real

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the most adorable couple ever photographed.

This is impossible to deny.

They loved each other so much and they wore it on their faces.

Don’t believe me?

I challenge you to look at these photos and not think “wow, this is an adorable couple.”

“True love is real.”

This one is so good.

For real. Look.

Smoking is bad but they do look cute together.

“Pucker up!”

Popcorn is just empty calories but there is nothing empty about the love in this photo.

Photos from movie sets are especially adorable because they’re in costume.

Awwwwwwwww.

I find myself looking at these photos of them all the time because the world can be a depressing place.

I love this one.

Anyway, today is National Puppy Day which is my excuse to share with you my favorite Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward photo.

Have a great day.

Best Daughter Ever Gets Father Off Work With Adorable Letter

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Google! It’s a company. Big one! Real big. Important too! The employees who work there work super hard, probably. Long hours, one imagines. Now let’s not overdo this. It’s not like they’re Chilean coal miners, but I think it’s fair to assume that they spend a lot of time away from their families. The children of Google engineers probably spend a similar amount of time wondering, “Why does daddy care more about the internet than me?” or “Why did mommy miss my recital? I understand that Google+ was down, but who would have even noticed? I’m her child for God’s sake!” Anyway, one way of remedying this would be to run away to an orphanage and live some sort of 21st century Dickens novel. And, yes, life would be tough but in the end, say come Christmas, you and all the other orphans would gather around a fire and there’d be turkey and apple cider and you’d speak in a Cockney accent and “another year in the books, governor! Things have been better but at least we’ve got each other!”

If you don’t want to go the orphan route, you could follow the example of Katie, a little girl whose dad works at Google. She wrote to his boss, Daniel Shiplacoff, and asked for daddy to be given a day off.

Here’s the super adorable letter:

It’s a bit hard to make out but it says: “Dear google worker, Can you please make sure when daddy goes to work, he gets one day off. Like he can get get a day off on wednesday. Because daddy ONLY gets a day off on saturday. From, Katie. P.S. It is daddy’s BIRTHDAY! P.P.S. It is summer, you know.”

Shiplacoff responded with a letter of his own:

Now Katie’s dad gets a whole week off to spend with his daughter. Presumably he will in fact spend it with her. That would be awful, right? If he didn’t? If he went and spent a week with his secret family in Hawaii? Not that he has a secret family. I don’t know him. He probably doesn’t. But if he does, he should make that secret family write an adorable letter if they want to see him. This is Katie’s time.
