The seventy-fifth anniversary edition of the classic book about Cape Cod, “written with simplicity, sympathy, and beauty” ( New York Herald Tribune ) A chronicle of a solitary year spent on a Cape Cod beach, The Outermost House has long been recognized as a classic of American nature writing. Henry Beston had originally planned to spend just two weeks in his seaside home, but was so possessed by the mysterious beauty of his surroundings that he found he “could not go.” Instead, he sat down to try and capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to: the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued that, “The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.” Seventy-five years after they were first published, Beston’s words are more true than ever.

Congressman Who Called Trump "Our Mussolini" Will Vote for Him Anyway

Mother Jones

Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) did not endorse Donald Trump during the Republican presidential primary. He endorsed Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and in a radio interview before his state’s caucus, he denounced the GOP front-runner in the strongest language possible: He called Trump a fascist. “Donald Trump does not represent Republican ideals; he is our Mussolini,” he said at the time. “Donald Trump’s approach is, ‘I am just going to do it.'” In the same interview, Stewart said the election was the most important since 1860, when Abraham Lincoln’s win prompted the South to secede.

But now that Trump has all but clinched his party’s nomination, Stewart is having second thoughts on the GOP’s Mussolini. “While Mr. Trump wasn’t my first choice, we must move forward and unite to defeat Hillary Clinton,” he told the Associated Press.

As recently as a week ago, Republican lawmakers were promising to fight Trump on the beaches (or at least the convention floor in Cleveland) if necessary to stop the steak magnate from taking control of the party. Now, even the guy who compared Trump to a fascist dictator is coming on board.

A Giant Glob of Deadly Algae Is Floating off the West Coast

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

From the air, the Pacific algal bloom doesn’t look like much of a threat: a wispy, brownish stream, snaking up along the West Coast. But it’s causing amnesia in birds, deadly seizures in sea lions, and a crippling decline in the West Coast shellfish industry. Here’s what you need to know about it, from what this bloom has to do with the drought to why these toxins could be a real threat to the homeless.

What’s causing it? The culprit is a single-celled plant called pseudo-nitzschia, one of thousands of species of algae that produce more than 50 percent of the world’s oxygen through photosynthesis. They’re a hardy variety usually found in cool, shallow oceans, where they survive on light and dissolved nutrients, including silcates, nitrates, and phosphates. “They’re sort of like the dandelions of the sea,” says Vera Trainer, who manages the Marine Biotoxin Program at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle. “They’re always there in some low numbers, just waiting for nutrients to be resupplied to the ocean’s surface.” In most years, blooms in the eastern Pacific are contained near “hot spots” that dot the West Coast—relatively shallow and sheltered places like California’s Monterey Bay or the Channel Islands. They usually flare up in April or May as trade winds cycle nutrient-rich waters from offshore depths to the coast in a process called “upwelling,” but they fade after only a few weeks.

California sea lion pups and New England moose — that’s who!

Let’s start with the moose. According to National Geographic, the moose population in New Hampshire went from about 7,500 in the late 90s to about 4,500 by 2013. In Maine, where about 60,000 moose make up the densest moose population in the lower 48, scientists also suspect a decline (although data is scarce).

The culprit? Our old enemy, climate change, which is giving a boost to another old enemy, bloodthirsty ticks, says National Geographic:

The reason is likely climate change, biologists say, which is ushering in shorter, warmer winters that are boosting the fortunes of winter ticks. The tiny creatures latch on to moose here in staggering numbers: One moose can house 75,000 ticks, which are helping to drive a troubling rise in moose deaths, especially among calves.

Warning: Things are about to get horrifying.

When a moose gets covered in ticks, it can turn into something called a “ghost moose” — what National Geographic describes as “an animal so irritated by ticks that it rubs off most of its dark brown hair, exposing its pale undercoat and bare skin. […] With their skinny necks, emaciated bodies, and big, hairless splotches, these moose look like the walking dead as they stumble through the forest.”

And now, in equally devastating news: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that the number of sea lion pups that have shown up stranded on the beaches of southern California so far this year has already surpassed the total number of beachings between 2004 and 2012.

We’ve already covered this tragedy, which is likely due to rising ocean temperatures driving away sea lion prey, but if you want to see how scientists are trying to help these pups, check out the video below from Vice. In it, marine mammal biologist Colleen Weiler speculates about what’s causing these warm waters:

“It is an El Niño year, but it’s a weak El Niño. it could be a larger ocean cycle thing that we just don’t understand yet. It could be climate change related. That’s the big question — what’s causing these warmer temperatures that’s pushing all the fish really far offshore?”
