Mooncakes Are China’s Fruit Cake—Traditional Holiday Gifts No One Actually Wants

Image: Franz&P

Last year, China threw away 2 million mooncakes—the little cakes eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to the Wall Street Journal, the country has 10,000 mooncake makers, who last year produced more than 300,000 tons of the sweets. And many of them, along with their elaborate packaging, ended up in landfills. So many, in fact, that this year the Chinese government has issued guidelines to cut down on the mooncake waste.

The guidelines lay out rules about packaging, urge manufacturers to reduce, reuse and recycle and to choose materials that are easier on the environment, should the cakes be tossed in the trash. Mooncake disposal isn’t a new problem, either. In the past, the government has issued rules that the cost of packaging the little cakes cannot exceed the cost of making the treats by more than 25 percent.

According to Green Power, a Hong Kong–based environmental group, the number of mooncake casualties hasn’t really gone down. They say that the average household purchases 2.4 boxes of mooncakes—often intended as gifts. Multiply that by the number of people celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, and you’re at 4.6 million units of cake.

The Journal‘s Te-Ping Chen says that the best way to cut the mooncake craze might not be regulation, at all, but rather painting mooncakes as an evil excess:

But in the end, the most effective catalyst for trimming Mid-Autumn waste may be China’s anti-corruption drive, with the Communist Party recently making mooncakes the latest casualty of its quest to keep officials clean. Last month, the state-run People’s Daily announced a drive for more mooncake austerity, saying that “polite reciprocity, when overdone, becomes a kind of squandering of cash.” According to a People’s Daily report last week, sales of luxury mooncakes this year have dropped by as much as 12% in certain locations.

So, it seems that, in China, the new orders are: “Let them not eat cake.”

Sail-Powered Ships Are Making a Comeback

A c 1835 lithograph of the clipper ship Challenger. Photo: Library of Congress

“Clipper ships were not a specific design, they were a state of mind,” says John Lienhard, an engineer from the University of Houston. “And that state of mind lasted only a decade.”

Bristling with a staggering array of sails and built for speed, clipper ships were the “greyhounds of the sea.” And now, because of rising fuel costs and limits on gas emissions, says Businessweek, clippers—sails and all—may be on their way back.

Rolls-Royce Holdings is best known for producing engines that powered planes from the late Concorde to the current Airbus superjumbo. Now the British propulsion giant is working with partners to develop a modern-day clipper ship, as it bets that regulations curbing air pollution emissions will increase fuel costs for conventional ocean freighters and herald a New Age of Sail.

In the mid-19th century, says Lienhard, soaring prices for cargo shipping made it more profitable for vessels to be swift instead of bulky—a change that drove the temporary reign of clippers.

So masts rose into the sky. Hulls developed a knife-edged bow. And the widest beam was moved over half-way back. Economy and long life were literally thrown to the winds. Ships began to look like they’d sailed out of a child’s dream. They were tall and beautiful. Acres of canvas drove them at 14 knots.

The ships, says the Australian National Maritime Museum, “won the admiration and envy of the world. Hundreds of Yankee clippers, long and lean, with a beautiful shape, and acres of canvas sails roamed the globe carrying passengers and freight.” The end of the high shipping fees in 1855, though, sunset the era of the clippers, says Lienhard.

The origin of the clipper ship can be found in the mindset of the 19th century entrepeneur that was driven by market competition and profit. Profits depended on how quickly a cargo reached the market. This created a demand for fast vessels and a willingness to push the boundaries of design and technology.

Now, those same market forces are pushing shipping technology once more—tying the old to the new in a bid to face new challenges with old ideas.

Sorry, Wall Street Journal: Renewable Fuel Lowers Gas Prices

Posted 22 July 2013 in

National

In its new editorial, the Wall Street Journal is concerned you might be feeling some extra pain at the pump:

The summer is high driving season, so $4 gasoline in many parts of the country will add to the cost of family vacations.

And we couldn’t agree more. As they concede early on, the price of gas is mostly set by global supply and demand. But when the WSJ goes on to claim that the Renewable Fuel Standard is driving prices up even more, that’s when their argument fallsl apart. Renewable fuel actually lowers the price of gas, plain and simple.

Here’s what the WSJ gets wrong:

  1. The so-called blend wall is a fabrication, essentially the oil industry’s attempts to evade its responsibilities under the Renewable Fuel Standard. E15 fuel has been extensively tested and is ready for sale, and misinformation about its safety or efficiency only confuses consumers (who we know want more renewable fuel options when they fill up).
  2. The RFS and its associated “RIN credits” have not been a factor in higher retail gasoline prices, according to an analysis conducted by Informa Economics, Inc. In fact, the study found ethanol costs significantly less than gasoline at the wholesale level and is reducing pump prices for consumers across the country.
  3. Renewable fuel and the Renewable Fuel Standard are helping reduce carbon emissions. In 2012, the use of renewable fuel slashed greenhouse gas emissions by 33.4 million metric tons.

Remember this: as long as the WSJ continues to take its talking points straight from the oil companies, we’ll be here to make sure you’re getting the facts.
