Donald Trump has a solution to crime in America’s black neighborhoods: stop-and-frisk.

Trump was in Cleveland on Wednesday for a conference of pastors at a local church, along with Fox News host Sean Hannity. As part of the event, Trump attended a town hall meeting on “African-American concerns,” according to the church’s website, that is slated to air Wednesday night on Hannity’s show. An excerpt of the transcript from the town hall shows an audience member asking Trump what he would do to help decrease violence in the black community.

Trump’s answer? Stop-and-frisk on a national level.

“We did it in New York—it worked incredibly well,” Trump said of the practice, which empowered police officers to stop a person on the street for a pat-down if they suspected him or her of wrongdoing. In fact, data showed that the practice effectively turned into racial profiling that disproportionately targeted black New Yorkers. Studies also found that stop-and-frisk was ineffective in catching criminals or preventing crime. A federal judge ruled it unconstitutional in 2013.

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman just made Donald Trump an offer that should entice the GOP nominee who claims to have donated millions to veterans: If Trump releases his tax returns by October 19, the date of the last presidential debate, Hoffman will donate up to $5 million to veteran groups.

The original idea came from a crowd-funding campaign started by Peter Kiernan, a veteran of the Marines who was once deployed to Afghanistan. Kiernan said he would donate to 10 veteran’s groups should Trump release his taxes and began raising money to do so on Crowdpac.com.

In a Medium post published on Monday afternoon, LinkedIn co-founder Hoffman expressed his support for Kiernan’s campaign, and upped the ante by promising to quintuple the final total raised by Kiernan, up to $5 million.

Kiernan explained his reasoning on the campaign’s site. “Any servicemember who has ever held a security clearance has been subjected to a rigorous background check, including personal finances, affiliations, and drug activity…To be the Commander-in-Chief of this group, you should be held to the same standards.”

In his post, Hoffman also noted both the tactic and the actual dollar amount should have special significance to the GOP nominee: In 2012, Trump offered Barack Obama $5 million to release his college transcripts, his passport applications, and other documents.

As BuzzFeed points out, Hoffman’s intentions might not just be about the 2016 election. He was an early investor in Crowdpac, the site hosting Kiernan’s crowd-funding campaign, so he potentially stands to benefit financially from raising the site’s profile.

In January, Trump skipped a Republican primary debate in Iowa and instead held a fundraiser for veterans during the same time slot. (He initially claimed to have donated $6 million from the event to veteran charities, but his campaign has significantly decreased that estimate following reports suggesting the initial figure was inflated.) But the nominee has also been adamant about keeping his tax returns from the public eye: Though he promised to release them in May, he has since reversed his position, saying he would withhold the records because he was being audited by the IRS. (The agency has said that’s not necessary.)

As Hoffman explains, the proposal “gives Trump a strong incentive to act but doesn’t reward him directly for something he should have already done. Instead, men and women to whom all Americans owe a great debt of gratitude will benefit from any positive action he takes.”

A massive crack in one of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves has grown exponentially in recent months, and scientists worry a break-off could destabilize the entire structure.

For two years, United Kingdom-based Project MIDAS has been monitoring a large rift in the Larsen C ice shelf, located on the northern end of the Antarctic peninsula. And if the project’s latest findings are any indication, Larsen C could be headed for a similar fate as nearby Larsen A and Larsen B, which collapsed and disintegrated in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

Since March, the last time satellites were able to observe Larsen C, Project MIDAS said the crack has extended nearly 14 miles ― about three miles per month.

“As this rift continues to extend, it will eventually cause a large section of the ice shelf to break away as an iceberg,” according to the report.

Now, measuring some 80 miles in length, the crack could ultimately dislodge a chunk of ice the size of Delaware, The Washington Post reports.

At 21,000 square miles, Larsen C is the largest ice shelf in the region, according to a 2015 report. In recent years, however, what was once a small fracture has rapidly moved through the frozen structure, widening to more than 1,000 feet. The crack, scientists wrote in last year’s report, “is likely in the near future to generate the largest calving event since the 1980s and result in a new minimum area for the ice shelf.”

Project MIDAS previously estimated the breakaway would remove between 9 and 12 percent of the ice shelf.

“The trajectory of the rift now implies that the higher of these two estimates is more likely,” the MIDAS team wrote in its post last week. “Computer modeling suggests that the remaining ice could become unstable, and that Larsen C may follow the example of its neighbor Larsen B, which disintegrated in 2002 following a similar rift-induced calving event.”

In 2014, more than a decade after its collapse, scientists determined the event was triggered by warming air temperatures.

Since ice shelves float on the ocean’s surface, the calving event wouldn’t immediately raise sea levels. An event of this scale, however, could destabilize the entire shelf, resulting in its disintegration and the release of the glacier ice it holds back ― ultimately raising sea levels.

As for when the iceberg will make its break, that’s hard to say, Martin O’Leary, a glaciologist at Swansea University in the United Kingdom, told The Washington Post.

“It’s a lot like predicting an earthquake ― exact timings are hard to come by,” he told the Post. “Probably not tomorrow, probably not more than a few years.”

When it does, it could spark a vanishing act that resembles what happened at Larsen B, which NASA highlights in the video below:

Following leaked reports that revealed Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, Donald Trump held an event on Saturday to officially introduce the Indiana governor as his vice presidential pick, a choice Trump said would help bring “party unity” to his campaign.

“I found the leader who will help us deliver a safe society and a prosperous society for all Americans,” Trump said, speaking from the Hilton Midtown in New York City. “Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was my first choice. I’ve admired the work he’s done, especially in Indiana.”

“He is going to fight for you,” he continued. “He is a solid, solid person.”

Before Pence arrived on stage, Trump spent most of the introduction discussing himself and attacking Hillary Clinton. At times, it appeared as though he almost forgot the purpose of the event was to unveil Pence as his running mate.

The presumptive Republican nominee reportedly had last minute reservations about the decision to put Pence on the ticket, and was furious the governor’s name surfaced in the media before he made a formal announcement. Trump, however, denied reports he had hesitated:

“Donald Trump is a good man and he will make a great president of the United States,” Pence said on Saturday in his speech accepting Trump’s offer. “Hillary Clinton must never become our president.”

5 Good Ways to Back Up Your Computer

When my computer was stolen recently, I breathed a sigh of relief. That’s because all my files were backed up.

Then I got really upset, because my external hard drive with my backed up files turned out to have been stolen, too. Fortunately, everything was also backed up to a cloud account. But that turned out not to be ideal, because it meant that while I could still get access to my files, I wouldn’t have them downloaded in a “mirror image” of what was on my computer the way the hard drive would have. Plus, it tookthree days and a lot of customer support to recover them my files in a way that I could use them. My cloud back-up didn’t include any of the software I’d installed on my computer, like Microsoft Office, so that was another complication.

In the course of filing police reports, buying a new computer, recovering my data and reinstalling my software, I learned a lot about how to protect the contents of my computer in the event it is stolen again (or gets destroyed in a fire or tornado, accidentally dropped on cement, flooded with coffee, theinternal hard drive fails…). Chief among them is this list of the best ways to back up my computer.

1) Back up in two different ways and in two different places.

My computer was backed up to bothanexternal hard drive as well as over the Internet. Though recovering my files from the Internet servicewas inconvenient, at least they were there. If I’d only relied on the external hard drive, I’d have been sunk. On the other hand, if I lose Internet connectivity, it’s reassuring to have an external hard drive back up. The fees to back up over the Internetare pretty minimal (mine is only about $60 a year), and an external hard drive is pretty cheap. Pay the money and get those systems in place. You won’t regret it.

2) Use an external hard drive. But hide it.

There are lots of benefits to an external hard drive. It can create a mirror image of your computer, so that, if you need to reinstall your entire computer on a new machine, it’s easy to do so. It’s portable and is available in the event your connection to the Internet goes down. But the big lesson I learned is, don’t keep it in plain sight next to your computer if there’s a chance you think your computer could be stolen. And even if theft is not involved, your computer could be subject to other factors that could also destroy your external hard drive if it’s right nearby. By the way, rather than a larger external hard drive, you can use USB drives. However, you might find yourself using several drives that don’t have the storage capacity of one large one. I’ve found that using a smaller USB drive works fine for individual files, but not for my entire computer.

3) Online backup over the Internet.

With online backup using something like Carbonite, BackBlaze or CrashPlan, you’ll install software on your computer that will regularly scan your files, encrypt them and send them to a high-storage server that you can access electronically. The advantage of such a systemis that your data in all likelihood will remain protected regardless of theft, natural disaster or breakage. The disadvantage is that it can take a few days to upload all of your data to your accountand then to download it again if you need it. That said, in many cases you can download specific files to get access to them immediately while all of your data is being downloaded.

LifeHacker reviewed many online back-up plans and rates these five as the best. Whatever plan you choose, make sure that their customer service is adequate. When I had to download my files to my new computer recently, I probably required about 10 hours of customer service to deal with various problems that cropped up.

4) Use a Cloud Storage Device.

Some cloud storage devices you may have heard of include Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. Some advantages are that these systems are cheap and protect against most data loss. The downside may be that they offer limited storage space for free, so you’ll have to pay to upgrade for more storage.Here’s more info on how to use Google Drive as a backup tool. 5) Use Flickr or Google for Photos.

Though all my pictures from my computer were saved and then re-downloaded, having my computer stolen made me realize that I could use an external back-up just for my photos. Flickr could be pretty good for this. It’s free, you can get a mobile app to make it easy to upload your photos to your account, and there’s lots of storageabout 500,000 full-resolution pictures’ worth! The pictures I take on my phone automatically get saved to my Google account, which is very convenient. However, that’s not true of the pictures I save to my computer. Putting those pics on Flickr could make them more accessible in the event all my other systems fail.

As you contemplate what kind of back-up systems to put in place, take stock of how much storage you actually need, and for what. Do you mostly have word-based files to protect or do you have a huge data base of pictures, videoand music? Don’t automatically buy a 4 terrabyte drive when a 750 gigabyte model would do just as well. If you’re not sure what you need, contact customer support for your computer and ask their advice. Also, if you are running several computers on a home network, consider a network drive you can share.

Mac/Apple users have different considerations than do PC users. Here is an excellent overview of back-up options specific to a Mac.Keep in mind that Time Machine is a backup utility. It doesn’t archive your information like an offline storage system does. So while it’s good for capturing the most recent data on your disk, it won’t have everything you’ve ever worked on.

Illegal Immigrant Tries to Kill Donald Trump!

An illegal immigrant who is apparently mentally ill tried to grab a policeman’s gun yesterday so that he could shoot Donald Trump. I gather that it was a fairly half-hearted effort, but still: “Illegal Immigrant Tries to Kill Trump”! Where are the headlines? Jim Geraghty comments:

The recent chaos on the Trump campaign, as big a story as it is, shouldn’t cause this event to disappear from the public’s attention. It illuminates the disconcerting fact that once legal temporary immigrants enter the country, the authorities have no real way to keep track of them. And a lot of them take advantage of that fact….We need border security. But even if you completely sealed the southern border, America would still have a significant number of illegal immigrants walking its streets.

Quite so. But forget the media. We all know they’re in thrall to political correctness and won’t print anything that might cast Mexican immigrants in an unfavorable light. But what about Trump? His Twitter feed is empty. Why isn’t he shouting about this from the rooftops? I mean, it totally vindicates his point about building a wall and—

Wait. What? I should read the whole story. Fine. Here’s the BBC:

A British man arrested while trying to grab a policeman’s gun at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas has been described in his home town as “a strange one”….Surrey Police said it was “providing family liaison support on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office”….The BBC understands he lived with his mother Lynne in Dorking, Surrey until about 18 months ago.

Surrey police? Dorking? A British man? What’s that all about?

Ah, I get it. Michael Sandford is white. And he’s from Britain. A wall wouldn’t keep him out. And anyway, Trump’s base doesn’t hate residents of Dorking who overstay their visas. He’s not the right kind of illegal immigrant. So we’ll all ignore him.

POSTSCRIPT: On another note, Geraghty, like many conservatives, complains that we have “no real way to keep track” of visitors who overstay their visas. That’s true. But what exactly do they expect? GPS tracking collars? It’s not as if someone who’s illegally overstaying their visa is going to voluntarily check in at their nearest consulate. And even if we did track them somehow, what good would it do? I’m puzzled by this whole thing.

Donald Trump Just Banned the Washington Post From Covering His Campaign

Donald Trump issued an edict on his Facebook page Monday afternoon: The Washington Post will no longer be credentialed to cover his campaign. “Based on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump campaign,” Trump wrote, “we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post.”

Trump appeared to take issue with the Post‘s characterization of his response to this weekend’s Orlando shooting, in which he suggested that President Barack Obama had some involvement in the attacks, according to the Post. The paper now joins an extensive list of publications that have incurred Trump’s wrath—though this is the first time his campaign has publicly acknowledged a blanket ban on allowing a media outlet to cover his campaign. As I reported in March, Trump’s campaign has regularly denied press credentials to outlets including Buzzfeed, the Huffington Post, the Des Moines Register, Univision, National Review, and Mother Jones.

For a time, being denied credentials was more of a hassle than a true impediment for reporters seeking to cover Trump’s events. When I’ve been turned down for credentials in the past, I’ve waited in the general public line, which is sometimes hours long, and still been able to attend Trump’s events. Recently, however, the Trump campaign ejected a Politico reporter from an event in California after he entered the event with the general public.

Update: Shortly after Trump made his pronouncement on Facebook, Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron fired back.

Donald Trump Supporters Violently Attacked in San Jose

Chaos erupted outside a Donald Trump rally in San Jose, California, on Thursday, as a crowd of protesters violently attacked supporters of the presumptive GOP nominee as they left the event. Some of the protesters were seen waving Mexican flags and burning the real estate magnate’s trademark “Make America Great Again” hat.

At one point, a protester hurled a heavy bag at a supporters’ head, leaving him with blood trailing down his face and onto his shirt. The incident was recorded on video:

The Los Angeles Times reports at least a dozen people, including one police officer, were attacked at the scene. Several people were taken into custody, but the police declined to say how many were arrested. It’s unclear who exactly was responsible for the violence. The ugly scene comes just days before the California primaries on Tuesday.

Throughout the Republican primary season, Trump rallies have included hostile confrontations between his supporters and protesters. The real estate magnate has been repeatedly criticized for failing to condemn—and perhaps even encouraging—his supporters to act violently. He even promised at one point to pay for his supporters’ legal fees should they tussle with protesters and have trouble with law enforcement officials. But on Thursday, it appears demonstrators flipped the script on the continued brawls—a move that likely plays squarely into Trump’s hands.

Donald Trump told a Wisconsin town hall on Wednesday that his proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States would have an exception for the billionaire’s rich friends.

“I have actually—believe it or not, I have a lot of friends that are Muslim and they call me,” Trump said, when asked about his plan by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, the event’s moderator. “In most cases, they’re very rich Muslims, OK?”

Matthews then asked Trump if his rich Muslim friends would be able enter the country under Trump’s Muslim ban. “They’ll come in,” Trump said. “You’ll have exceptions.”

But he didn’t stop there. A few moments later, when Matthews suggested that a blanket ban might rub Muslims the wrong way, Trump flipped the script, arguing that it would instead have a galvanizing effect on Middle Eastern countries in the fight against ISIS.

“Maybe they’ll be more disposed to fight ISIS,” Trump said. “Maybe they’ll say, ‘We want to come back into America, we’ve got to solve this problem!'”

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton wasted little time dismissing Trump’s comments:

California Dives Into the Unknown With $15 Minimum Wage

San Francisco and Los Angeles have already passed laws raising their minimum wages to $15 per hour. Now, in a victory for labor activists who were getting ready to put a $15 minimum wage on the ballot, the state is getting ready to follow suit:

According to a document obtained by The Times, the negotiated deal would boost California’s statewide minimum wage from $10 an hour to $10.50 on Jan. 1, 2017, with a 50-cent increase in 2018 and then $1-per-year increases through 2022. Businesses with fewer than 25 employees would have an extra year to comply, delaying their workers receiving a $15 hourly wage until 2023.

Future statewide minimum wage increases would be linked to inflation, but a governor would have the power to temporarily block some of the initial increases in the event of an economic downturn.

This would genuinely be terra incognita. The chart on the right shows the California minimum wage over the past 40 years, adjusted for inflation. An increase to $11 per hour in 2018 would return the state to slightly above its historical high point. Beyond that, however, the minimum wage goes far higher than it’s ever been.

What effect will that have, especially in lower-wage areas outside the big cities? There’s no telling. It won’t be Armageddon, but it might not be entirely benign either. Small increases in the minimum wage seem to have little or no effect on employment, but this increase isn’t small, and it unquestionably gets us beyond merely catching up with past erosion in the minimum wage. A statewide minimum of $15 would be a brand new thing.

Kansas recently tried out full-bore right-wing economics, and it’s pretty much been a disaster. Now liberals are getting their chance in California. Come back in a decade and we’ll find out if left-wing economics does any better.
