Canada’s New Prime Minister May Be a Liberal—But He Still Loves the Keystone Pipeline

Justin Trudeau is better on climate than Stephen Harper. But he’s no Barack Obama. Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press/AP Well before his stunning victory in Canada’s elections, Justin Trudeau, the Liberal party leader, telephoned David Suzuki, the country’s best-known science broadcaster, environmentalist—and a national treasure—to ask for his endorsement. The conversation did not go well. Suzuki admitted to journalists he called Trudeau a twerp, and the Liberal leader dismissed his critique of the party’s climate policy as “sanctimonious crap.” Those hoping for a U-turn in Canada’s climate change policy after Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s crushing defeat are in for a reality check. Trudeau has repudiated Harper’s vision of Canada as an “energy superpower,” promised to reverse devastating cuts to government science budgets, and fix the country’s reputation as a carbon bully in international climate negotiations. But it would be a mistake to see Trudeau or the Liberals as climate champions. In his victory speech on Monday, there was no mention of climate change, and he was criticized for being vague on the issue during campaigning. Read the rest at The Guardian. Pope Francis Forcefully Urges America to Save the Planet

Watch the pope’s powerful speech at the White House this morning. President Obama welcomed Pope Francis to the White House Wednesday morning to loud cheers from thousands gathered to greet the leader of the Catholic church—in a city that has virtually shut down for the historic event. The ceremony marks the first time that Pope Francis has visited the United States and kicks off a much anticipated three-city tour that includes Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. During his first address in the United States, Francis pulled no punches when talking about one of the defining issues of his leadership, calling on Americans to protect our “common home” and act on climate change with a sense of urgency—a stance that many Republicans have criticized. “It seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation,” Francis said, in slow but forceful English. “We know by faith that the Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home.” He is scheduled to speak before Congress on Thursday, where he is expected bring his climate agenda directly to lawmakers. President Obama also took the opportunity to praise Francis’s stance on climate change, telling the pope: “you remind us that we have a sacred obligation to protect our planet—God’s magnificent gift to us.” Watch below: Master image of Pope Francis and Obama: Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP Link:  Pope Francis Forcefully Urges America to Save the Planet ; ; ;

California Is on Fire. This Map Shows Where.

On the two-year anniversary of the Rim Fire, the state confronts more vicious blazes. A wildfire burning near Clearlake, Calif., earlier this month. Josh Edelson/AP On August 17, 2013—two years ago today—a deer hunter near California’s Yosemite National Park ignored a campfire ban and burned trash from his dinner. The embers blew into dry brush, starting the third worst wildfire in the state’s history. All told, the Rim Fire, as it came to be called, burned 257,314 acres in and around Yosemite. No wildfires of that scale have occurred since, but, thanks to drought and climate change, California is far from out of the woods. In fact, in 2015, 4,382 wildfires have already scorched a total of 117,960 acres, more than double the 5 year average for this time of year. Firefighters have finally controlled the largest two fires, in Northern California’s Jerusalem Valley, but not before the blazes razed nearly 100,000 acres. Read the rest at Mother Jones.
