The New York Public Library just digitized and made available more than 180,000 high resolution items, which the public can download for free.
The images come from pieces in the library’s collection that have fallen out of copyright or are otherwise in the public domain. This includes botanical illustrations, ancient texts, historical maps–including the incredible Green Book collection of travel guides for African American travelers in mid-1900s. They’ve also released more than 40,000 stereoscopes, Berenice Abbott’s amazing documentation of New York City in 1930s and Lewis Hines’ photos of Ellis Island immigrants, as well as the letters of Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, among other political figures.
One of the related projects they’ve created with this release is a cool visualization tool that lets you browse every item released.
It’s a true treasure trove and–warning!–a total time suck.

This has sure been a crappy week, and Hilbert and Hopper agree. As you can see, they decided to flee upstairs to the bedroom and adopt disapproving looks. Those are for Donald Trump. They are hoping that us human types can do more than just glower, so let’s get to it.

Hopper has been hogging the catblogging show lately, so today you get a double dose of her brother: Hilbert and his shadow. That shadow looks very Halloween-y, doesn’t it? Of course, that means lots of firecrackers tomorrow, which probably means lots of time spent hiding under the bed. On the bright side, we also set our clocks back, so everyone gets to sleep in an extra hour to make up for it. That sounds like a pretty good trade to me. I’m not sure what the cats think of it.

Will I be liveblogging the Republican debate tonight? Yes. Yes I will. I’ll probably grow hair on my palms as a result, but I’m doing it anyway.
The debate is on CNBC and allegedly starts at 8 pm Eastern, but I imagine the actual debating probably doesn’t begin until 8:30 or thereabouts. So if you want to be part of history, come on by between 8 and 8:30 and join the snarkfest.

The world’s longest yard sale runs for nearly 700 miles along a mostly vertical line connecting Alabama and Michigan, from the first Thursday in August through the first Sunday.
But what if the first Sunday comes before the first Thursday? Do they cancel the sale that year? Does it run backward through time? I demand answers.
