America’s Boat and Engine Experts Teach Lawmakers about the Benefits of Ethanol

Last week, certified mechanics, engine performance experts, and professional fishermen visited Capitol Hill to instruct lawmakers on the finer points of ethanol use in marine engines.

From left to right: Marc Rauch, Executive Vice President and Co-Publisher at the Auto Channel; Joel Hennen, President and Owner of Hennen’s Auto Service; Brian Sowers, Co-Host of Crappie Masters TV; & Keith Holmes, President and Owner of CK Motorsports

At a briefing hosted by Fuels America, the experts dispelled some of the oil industry’s favorite myths about modern engines and explained the importance of biofuels in protecting the environment, preserving America’s energy security, and providing a high-octane boost to race boats.

The event was timely, as the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is expected – sometime this month – to complete its review of the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed blending requirements for ethanol and advanced biofuels in 2017. Under the Renewable Fuel Standard, the EPA is obligated to ensure that America’s fuel mix continues to lower our dependence on oil, keep our air clean, and combat climate change. And that makes the RFS vital to boaters, racers, fishermen and mechanics around the country.

Keith Holmes provided his perspective as President and Owner of CK Motorsports in Nunica, Michigan and a Certified Mercury Marine Racing Technician. One of his slides helps illustrate the point that ethanol is an ideal fuel for race craft:

Holmes: “Ethanol burns cleaner and cooler. Since the introduction of E10, we find that many engine parts have a 25 to 50 percent longer lifespan. The National Boat Racing Association exclusively uses E10 for all their races.”

Brian Sowers tells lawmakers that Crappie Master Champions all use an ethanol blend in their tanks

Brian Sowers provided a sportsman’s perspective as Co-Host of Crappie Masters TV, covering the Crappie Masters All American Tournament Trail based in Clinton, Missouri: “I want to take my grandkids fishing someday. That means having clean water and clean air.”

Marc Rauch pours some ethanol into a shot glass, explaining why ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline

Marc Rauch, Executive Vice President and Co-Publisher at the Auto Channel, based in Louisville, Kentucky: “As an oxygen booster, ethanol replaces toxins like MTBE, which are notorious for contaminating water supplies. And it reduces CO2 emissions by 34 to 100 percent or more compared to gasoline.”

Finally, a fuel retailer from the shores of the Minnesota River and Prior Lake explained why his customers have embraced ethanol blends for marine applications.

Joel Hennen explains the labels that ensure consumers always get the ethanol blend that’s best for their engine

Joel Hennen, President and Owner Hennen’s Auto Service: “Companies like Kawasaki, Mercury Marine, OMC, Pleasurecraft, Tigershark, Tracker, Honda, and Yamaha all approve the use of E10 in their engines. The labels are clear, and whether customers have a flex fuel vehicle or a race boat, we make it easy to pick the most affordable option with the lowest emissions.”

Meet Buddy, a lovely cat recently adopted by a friend of mine. Buddy is quite the sociable furball. He was carefully put into an acclimation room after the 6-hour (!) ride home, but only spent about five minutes there. Then he hopped out and started exploring. He explored the fish tank. He explored the gigantic cat perch. He slid across the wood floors. He jumped into everyone’s laps and started purring. And as you can see, he found a lovely, color-coordinated snoozing spot. It seems to be a match made in heaven.

Hopper has been hogging the catblogging show lately, so today you get a double dose of her brother: Hilbert and his shadow. That shadow looks very Halloween-y, doesn’t it? Of course, that means lots of firecrackers tomorrow, which probably means lots of time spent hiding under the bed. On the bright side, we also set our clocks back, so everyone gets to sleep in an extra hour to make up for it. That sounds like a pretty good trade to me. I’m not sure what the cats think of it.

Health Note

Mother Jones

I suppose the lack of content makes it obvious, but today has been a very bad day. I haven’t been able to sleep more than a few hours for the past few days, despite plenty of sleep meds. I’m completely exhausted, and not just because of the lack of sleep. That’s just making things worse. I can walk about 50 feet before I need to rest. My big accomplishment of the day was to turn on the TV around noon.

I assume this is all just part of the chemo withdrawal symptoms, but I don’t really know. Tomorrow I have an appointment with an oncology nurse, so perhaps I’ll learn more then.

If there’s a silver lining to this, I suppose it’s the possibility that this is the bottom of the post-chemo symptoms, and now I’ll start getting better. We’ll see.

Today’s theme is cat TV. On the left, Hilbert is camped out in front of the small TV in the dining room, perhaps hoping for a rerun of the squirrel docudrama that aired last week. On the right, Hopper is entranced by the big-screen TV in the study, probably watching the hummingbird reality series that seems to air constantly around here. It never gets old, though.

Have a happy black-and-white Friday. Also, a happy gray-and-white Friday. And be sure to watch lots of cat-approved TV.

Donald Sterling Is a Registered Republican

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Does it really matter whether racist LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling is a registered Democrat? Or a Republican? Or a member of the Pirate Party of Russia?

Well, according to multiple conservative media outlets, yes, it does matter. On Sunday, National Review ran a blog post originally titled, “Racist Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Is a Democrat.” The post breathlessly noted a handful of contributions he made in the early 1990s to Democratic politicians, including California politician Gray Davis and Sen. Bill Bradley, who had played in the NBA. (Sterling has owned his NBA team since the early 1980s.) The headline has since been changed to “Racist Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Has Only Contributed to Democrats,” with an update reading, “his official party affiliation is not known.” Still, the Donald-Sterling-Is-a-Democrat meme already took hold within right-wing media:

“Report: Clippers Owner Caught In Racist Rant Is A Democratic Donor” — Fox Nation.

“NBA Sterling is a Democrat…” — Matt Drudge.

“Race Hate Spewing Clippers Owner Is Democratic Donor” — the Daily Caller.

“Media Ignoring Dem Donations of LA Clippers’ Owner, Allegedly Caught on Tape in Race-Based Rant” — NewsBusters.

“LA Clippers Owner Donald Sterling is a Racist Democrat” — the Tea Party News Network.

Politico piggy-backed on this flood of Sterling-triggered liberal-shaming with a softer headline: “Donald Sterling made donations to Dems.”

Not that Sterling’s broader political views or party affiliation have much to do with the controversy over his insanely racist comments, but here’s a news flash for those conservatives eager to bring up the topic: He’s a Republican.

On Sunday, Michael Hiltzik, a Los Angeles Times columnist, tweeted that local voter records show Sterling to be a registered Republican “since 1998.” We followed up on that, and a search of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s website for Sterling’s name, date of birth, and address confirmed that he’s registered as a Republican:

There’s little reason to get excited about Sterling’s political affiliation. But if you choose to do so, you ought to get it right.
