Today, the American Petroleum Institute gathered reporters on a conference call to try and escape blame for what are sure to be record-high gas prices this summer. And while this event was full of API’s typical misdirection, one particular claim stood out to us – that compliance with the Renewable Fuel Standard will cause gasoline prices to increase by 30 percent in 2015. This could not be further from the truth.

The RFS and its associated “RIN credits” have not been a factor in higher retail gasoline prices, according to a new analysis conducted by Informa Economics, Inc. In fact, the study found ethanol costs significantly less than gasoline at the wholesale level and is reducing pump prices for consumers across the country.

Underlying API’s claims about the RFS is the idea that there’s a “blend wall” preventing the wider adoption of E15 renewable fuel (which happens to be the DoE’s most extensively tested fuel, ever). Back when the RFS was first passed, oil companies who supported the law effectively pledged to invest in the infrastructure necessary to bring E15 to our gas pumps. But now that they see renewable fuel as viable competition, they’ve done everything in their power to prevent its adoption. That means engaging in frivolous lawsuits, fabricating safety concerns about E15 and discouraging franchisees from carrying the fuel.

The oil companies don’t want to blend more renewable fuel into gasoline because it hurts their bottom line. In fact, it cost them (and saved you) $50 billion in 2012, so it’s no surprise they’re doing what they can to squash the competition. So who benefits from renewable fuel? You do, in the form of lower gas prices, reduced carbon emissions and increased national security. The choice should be clear.

Fuels America released a statement today in response to new legislation introduced by Sens. Bob Corker and Joe Manchin designed to chip away at the Renewable Fuel Standard:

The RFS was designed to drive growth in our domestic renewable fuel industry, and it is working. The private sector has made substantial investments based upon the RFS – and it is ready to make more. Changes to the policy jeopardize those investments and send a signal of uncertainty to investors, companies and scientists. Fuels America opposes any effort to modify the RFS.

“The best outcome for the oil companies is if nothing changes”

–Paul Bryan, former Chevron executive

This week, oil companies are releasing their quarterly financials and Chevron, like the rest of the industry, has managed once again to amass exorbitant profits at the expense of the American taxpayer – $6.2 billion dollars in the last three months alone.

Now if oil companies like Chevron were actually interested in reducing the squeeze on our wallets, they would reinvest some of those billions into the research and infrastructure we need to support alternative, renewable fuels. But instead, Chevron “quietly shelved” its renewable fuel projects in 2010, despite assurances from their own scientists that their research had yielded a “technical winner.”

This is all part of a larger pattern. Oil companies were willing to support renewable fuel last decade, when they didn’t see it as viable competition. But now that they see real change on the horizon, they’re more worried about protecting their monopoly than ushering in the next generation of transportation fuel. That’s why API and its corporate backers (like Chevron) will go to any lengths to kill the Renewable Fuel Standard because they know that if gas prices stay high, so do their profits.

If this makes you mad (it sure makes us mad), then take a stand and sign the pledge to support renewable fuel!

Fact Check: Forbes on the RFS

Fact Check: Forbes on the RFS

Posted 18 April 2013 in

National

In his recent Forbes piece, Robert Bradley harps on tired claims that we’ve tackled before: on E15 and consumer benefits; fuel safety (our friends at RFA said it best!); the role that renewable fuel plays in lowering gas prices; farmers’ ability to feed AND fuel Americans (we’ve taken on the “corn tortilla” confusion before); and the bright future for cellulosic fuels.

Oh, and, there’s plenty of support for the RFS from both sides of the aisle, at the state and national level (contrary to what Bradley claims).

Here’s what Forbes missed, and what you need to know: the RFS is working for consumers, and it’s working well.

Ethanol is blended into 97% of gasoline in America
That’s displaced as much gasoline as would have been made from 462 million barrels of imported oil last year
Renewable fuel blending slashed our spending on imported oil by $44 billion in 2012
Ethanol production has gotten increasingly efficient, generating 5% more ethanol from a bushel of corn than a decade ago, while water use has been reduced by 40%
And the renewable fuel industry is supporting thousands of jobs across the country (87,000 last year alone)

We could go on and on, but encourage you to visit the Renewable Fuel Association and check out their great round up of the benefits.

In light of all of this evidence, perhaps what Bradley is really trying to say is that the RFS isn’t working. . . for the oil industry. While Americans may want – and deserve – options when it comes to filling up their cars, the oil industry is clinging to it’s long-held monopoly.

When it comes to what benefits Americans, what is really counterproductive are attempts to undermine the RFS, and with it, our chance at fuel diversity.

Oil industry pays for another rigged “study”

Oil industry pays for another rigged “study”

We released the following statement today after the American Petroleum Institute (API) released a study on the economic impacts of the blend wall:

As sure as the moon waxes and wanes, the American Petroleum Institute buys studies to support their self-interested views. Their most recent study predictably attacks their main competitor: renewable fuel.

The oil industry has been complaining about the Renewable Fuel Standard, yet they are the ones who failed to invest in the infrastructure necessary to avoid the compliance mechanism that has them up in arms. Everyone knew this investment would be necessary many years ago, and in typical form, the oil industry is threatening to pass the cost of their own inaction on to consumers.

Since oil price is set on the world market, what you pay at the pump relies on what happens to world events that we cannot control, like the Cyprus bailout that is being debated today. If we want lower and more stable prices at the pump, we have to wean our way off of oil, and replace it with inexpensive and homegrown renewable fuel.

DuPont CEO: Renewable Fuel Standard a model for private/public collaboration

DuPont CEO: Renewable Fuel Standard a model for private/public collaboration

Today, DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman spoke at the 2013 Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Energy Innovation Summit, explaining that cooperation between government and the private sector, as well as innovative science, is the key to developing new sources of energy and finding alternatives to oil.

Kullman went on to say that the production of renewable fuel, encouraged by the Renewable Fuel Standard, is a perfect example of such collaboration:

Good government policy is critical and supports technology development and early manufacturing until the new technology is mature enough to stand on its own. There is no better illustration of this than the Renewable Fuel Standard. The RFS has succeeded in doing what Congress intended it to do. Continued policy stability will ensure continued progress – meaning renewable fuels technologies developed and optimized to reach the scale and maturity needed to permanently impact American energy security and consumer choice.

POLITICO Op-Ed: The Renewable Fuel Standard Works

This morning, POLITICO published an op-ed from the Union of Concerned Scientists and the DuPont Corporation, touting one powerful message:

The fuels of the future are here today, and we can thank Congress for enacting the Renewable Fuel Standard. This bedrock policy has brought us to the point where the first commercial facilities producing cellulosic renewable fuels are up and running, and several more are under construction. As a result of this innovative policy, the United States is a world leader in the development of this renewable energy source and has attracted billions of dollars of private-sector investment.
