Watch Activists Dangle Off a Portland Bridge to Block Shell’s Arctic-Bound Ship

Environmental activists have taken to kayak, chain, and even rocking chair to slow down Royal Dutch Shell’s plans to drill for oil in the Arctic this summer. For the past two days, they took their protest to a new extreme. Early Wednesday morning, around a dozen Greenpeace activists rappelled off a bridge over the Willamette River in Portland, Ore. to stop a Shell ship stationed there for repairs from returning to the Arctic. This morning, it appears they caused the ship to turn around after it tried to rejoin Shell’s fleet in the Arctic’s Chukchi Sea.

The ship, called the MSV Fennica, went all the way up to the Arctic only to find a 39-inch-long gash in its side. The damage was so serious, the ship had to travel all the way back to Portland for repairs. The Fennica is an icebreaker, but also carries Shell’s capping stack, needed to stop an underwater well leak; Shell can’t begin its exploring until the Fennica and its equipment is back and functioning in the Arctic.

In an effort to stop it from rejoining Shell’s fleet in the Chukchi Sea, and delay the oil giant’s drilling plans there, Greenpeace organized protestors to dangle from Portland’s St. John’s bridge and physically stop the ship from traveling down the Willamette River and back out to the Pacific. We reached out to Shell to confirm if the protestors have affected the Fennica’s schedule, but have not heard back.

Sometimes athletes choose to stand in the center of a movement and make a statement. Ohio State’s Cardale Jones, quarterback of this year’s national championship football team, took some time Thursday to ask a simple question on Twitter:

It wasn’t exactly incendiary stuff from Jones, who has been dinged for expressing himself on social media before. Still, when one fan decided to chime in to tell Jones to shut up and stick to football, the 22-year-old junior from Cleveland wasn’t having it:

Lindsey Graham learned the hard way on that you never give your phone number to a petty billionaire. But even though Donald Trump’s public read-out of Graham’s cell phone number to the entire country on Tuesday led to a slew of random calls, the Republican senator from South Carolina is responding with a sense of humor.

First he joked on Twitter that he needed a new phone thanks to the flood of calls, asking his Twitter followers on Tuesday afternoon what kind he should get.

Now Graham is trolling Trump in a video for IJReview, a conservative news site. Using fire, a toaster oven, a golf club, a cleaver, and other fun but totally unnecessary methods, he destroys a bunch of flip phones—and one unfortunate blender. “Or if all else fails, you can always give your number to The Donald,” Graham says in closing, before hurling one last phone off screen “for the veterans,” a dig at Trump’s attack on Sen. John McCain’s time as prisoner of war.

Someone may eventually want to tell Graham this isn’t actually how phone numbers work, but we’ll take the videos for now.

The Insane Story Behind Trump’s Deleted Nazi Tweet

Earlier today, Donald Trump tweeted out a campaign poster featuring what appeared to be men in Nazi uniforms, superimposed over the American flag. The tweet was swiftly deleted, but not before the internet went to work tracking down the original image, sourced to the stock photography website iStock.

Mother Jones can now reveal that the image in question was taken at a World War II reenactment near Kent, England, some time within the last five years, according to its photographer, George Cairns. We reached Cairns by Skype at his home in St Albans, a town just north of London, where he was hanging out playing video games when his Twitter feed started to blow up in response to the Trump story.

Cairns is a British freelance stock photographer and photography instructor who says he frequents war reenactments as good locations to pick up realistic-looking stock images—not just of Nazis, but also of American GIs and other soldiers. Cairns said he didn’t know much about Donald Trump beyond the controversy over a golf course the billionaire and GOP presidential contender bought in Scotland last year.

So what does Cairns make of Trump using his image to endorse his candidacy?

“Well luckily, it’s not endorsed him in a sense… So that’s a good thing,” he said. “I’m not a Trump supporter. I can sleep OK tonight.”

In an almost impossibly bizarre coincidence, this isn’t the first time the Cairns family has been caught up in a photo kerfuffle involving Nazis and American politicians. George’s brother John is also a stock photographer, and took the image of Nazi reenactors that was accidentally used in a flier for the campaign of North Carolina state legislator Tim Spear in 2010.

“I have photos of American soldiers as well,” Cairns said. “But for some reason, politicians seem to be downloading Nazis.”

The photo isn’t a massive moneymaker for the photographer. “I’ve sold that image twice this year,” Cairns said. Yesterday, Cairns made $8.64 on a sale. Today, $1.71. “I can buy a coffee!” he joked.

In the world of stock photography, you have basically no control over who uses your photos, Cairns said. The best you can do is pick keywords for the images you upload that let people know exactly what they’re buying. In this case, Cairns said, Trump’s people should have been able to tell what they were looking at.

“I tried to keyword it carefully so people would be aware that it’s WWII fascists.”

Trading was halted on the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday because of an apparent computer error. We don’t have all the answers just yet (the NYSE itself has said it isn’t the result of a cyber-attack, but is still investigating.)

We already knew that Google, Facebook, and Twitter employed relatively few African Americans, but new details show that the gap is truly striking. All three companies have disclosed their full EEO1 reports, detailed accounts of their employees’ race and gender demographics that the law requires them to submit to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The reports show that out of a combined 41,000 Twitter, Facebook, and Google employees, only 758, or 1.8 percent, are black. To put this in perspective, all of those workers could fit onto a single Airbus A380. Have a look:

African Americans comprise 13 percent of the overall workforce, which means they are underrepresented at Google, Facebook, and Twitter by a factor of 7. Here’s a visual comparison of the black employees…

Race and gender gaps in tech hiring have been hot-button issues as of late. Since last May, when Rev. Jesse Jackson showed up at Google’s shareholder meeting, he has won some serious diversity concessions from major tech companies—but the pace of minority hiring remains slow. As the Guardian noted yesterday, Facebook hired 1,216 new people last year, and only 36 were black. Since last year, the percentage of black Google workers has not changed.

It should be easier to shift workplace demographics at smaller companies. Twitter, with fewer than 3,000 employees in 2014, has a huge black user base that is sometimes referred to as “Black Twitter.” Jackson wants the company to do more to move the needle. “I am very disappointed,” he told the Guardian. “We are becoming intolerant with these numbers. There’s a big gap between their talk and their implementation.”

As a steady stream of companies dissociate themselves with Donald Trump over his recent comments accusing Mexican immigrants of being “rapists” who bring drugs and crime to the United States, the real estate mogul and GOP presidential candidate has taken to Twitter to lash out at his critics and vow legal retribution against the firms that have parted ways with him. The latest target of one of his irate Tweet storms is fellow Republican presidential hopeful and former New York Gov. George Pataki.

The back story behind the verbal smackdown? Earlier today, Pataki joined the growing number of people and companies that have taken issue with Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants. Pataki posted a letter on Twitter calling on fellow Republicans to “denounce” Trump’s comments by “standing up for our party, for the ideals that made America great, and stand for the basic decency and integrity entitled to every American, no matter their heritage or nationality.”

Meanwhile, companies continue to kick Donald to the curb. The latest to distance itself from the mogul is Macy’s which announced Wednesday that it will no longer carry “Donald Trump brand attire.” In a released statement the department store wrote that it was “disappointed” and “distressed” by the billionaire’s comments. The decision to cut ties was influenced by a MoveOn.org petition, which had amassed 700,000 signatures by Wednesday morning.

Did Trump respond to Macy’s decision? You bet. Shortly after dissing Pataki he refocused his aim on the retailer.

Over at Wonkblog, Pablo Barberá uses Twitter to rank all the presidential candidates from most liberal to most conservative. I’ll leave it up to the experts to debate whether his methodology is sound, since, you know, Twitter. Anyway, here it is:

What I liked about this ranking was that Barberá included a handful of media outlets in order to provide some landmarks for comparison, and he had the good taste to include Mother Jones as one of them. It turns out we rank in between Martin O’Malley and Lincoln Chafee, and right smack in the ideological middle of the congressional Democratic caucus.

Is that good or bad? I don’t know. But I figured everyone would want to know.

POSTSCRIPT: Also, note where Scott Walker is. The guy is really conservative.
