Research published in the journal Astrobiology projects that Earth could slip out of the sun’s habitable zone somewhere between 2 and 3 billion years from now. Earth’s water will evaporate, leaving The Rock Formerly Known As The Blue Planet as sterile as Venus. Nature explains:

The luminosity of a typical star increases as its composition and chemical reactions evolve over billions of years, pushing the habitable zone outward. Researchers reported in March that Earth is closer to the inner edge of the Sun’s habitable zone than previously thought.

The inner edge of the Sun’s habitable zone is moving outwards at a rate of about 1 metre per year. The latest model predicts a total habitable zone lifetime for Earth of 6.3 billion–7.8 billion years, suggesting that life on the planet is already about 70% of the way through its run.

All we need to do now is tackle the global warming problem and make sure that life stays habitable for humans for as many of those billions of years as possible. And if we manage to do that? One of the scientists involved with the study thinks we should book it for the next planet over.

“If we are still around, and the optimist in me likes to think we would be, I hope we’d be away from the Earth, perhaps on Mars, or spread out in a huge galactic family across the Milky Way,” University of East Anglia’s Andrew Rushby told The Guardian.

Step one: Solve anthropogenic global warming. Step two: Move to Mars. Seems easy enough.

Bad News: Inflationary Expectations Are Down

Yesterday Ben Bernanke kinda sorta said that the Fed might taper off its bond buying program slightly earlier than expected. Maybe. Naturally, markets went nuts. I ignored it, because I figured it was just Wall Street doing what Wall Street does: panicking over everything. Either that or the robots that do most of the trading were engaged in a few trillion epic microsecond battles. But it would all settle down before long.

As it turns out, investors might have been reacting to bad news out of China as much as they were to Bernanke. Who knows? In any case, stock markets fell, interest rates rose, and commodity prices dropped. No surprise there. But Neil Irwin points out something else: inflation expectations plummeted. Not right away, though. Not until this morning, when five-year inflation expectations dropped sharply from 1.86 percent to 1.76 percent.

So what caused this? If it were Bernanke, it would have happened yesterday. Is it generalized fear that the slowdown in China is going to hurt the global economy, which will lead to lower inflation in the U.S.? A reaction to the rise of the dollar? It’s puzzling—and the size of the drop is puzzlingly large and sharp. What’s worse, the Keynesians and the market monetarists are sure to provide us with diametrically opposite explanations of why this happened, which will keep us all even more puzzled.

But that said, current inflation is under control and inflationary expectations—for whatever reason—are obviously pretty firmly under control too. This is exactly the opposite of what we want, so it’s bad news no matter what the reason.

As of 2010, five of 13 major pest species had become largely immune to the Bt poisons in GMO corn and cotton, compared to just one species in 2005, scientists write in a paper published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

“Three of the five cases are in the US, where farmers have planted about half of the world’s Bt crop acreage,” reports Business Standard. “[The study] indicates that in the worst cases, resistance evolved in 2 to 3 years; but in the best cases, effectiveness of Bt crops has been sustained more than 15 years.”

The scientists, who analyzed 77 studies conducted on five continents, also found that other species appear to be developing resistance.

Perhaps as alarming as the growth in the number of Bt-resistant species is the growth in the amount of land upon which Bt crops are planted. From the paper:
