Following Donald Trump’s controversial comments suggesting that Mexican immigrants are “rapists” who bring drugs and crime to America, his fellow 2016 contenders have largely condemned his inflammatory remarks. But a handful of Republican hopefuls have either defended the real estate mogul or, in one case, fled a question on the subject to avoid going on the record.

Rick Santorum, Ted Cruz, and Ben Carson are standing behind Trump. They have defended (even applauded) the billionaire, in what might be attempts to appeal to conservatives opposed to immigration reform.

Donald Trump Goes to War With George Pataki on Twitter

Mother Jones

As a steady stream of companies dissociate themselves with Donald Trump over his recent comments accusing Mexican immigrants of being “rapists” who bring drugs and crime to the United States, the real estate mogul and GOP presidential candidate has taken to Twitter to lash out at his critics and vow legal retribution against the firms that have parted ways with him. The latest target of one of his irate Tweet storms is fellow Republican presidential hopeful and former New York Gov. George Pataki.

The back story behind the verbal smackdown? Earlier today, Pataki joined the growing number of people and companies that have taken issue with Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants. Pataki posted a letter on Twitter calling on fellow Republicans to “denounce” Trump’s comments by “standing up for our party, for the ideals that made America great, and stand for the basic decency and integrity entitled to every American, no matter their heritage or nationality.”

Meanwhile, companies continue to kick Donald to the curb. The latest to distance itself from the mogul is Macy’s which announced Wednesday that it will no longer carry “Donald Trump brand attire.” In a released statement the department store wrote that it was “disappointed” and “distressed” by the billionaire’s comments. The decision to cut ties was influenced by a MoveOn.org petition, which had amassed 700,000 signatures by Wednesday morning.

Did Trump respond to Macy’s decision? You bet. Shortly after dissing Pataki he refocused his aim on the retailer.

All on Twitter, of course.

The Majesty of the Law, Rare Wine Edition

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Rudy Kurniawan is a rare wine dealer who was convicted of defrauding his billionaire clients by pouring cheap wine into faked-up bottles and pawning them off as rare vintages. Yesterday he was sentenced to 10 years in prison despite his attorney’s plea for leniency:

“Nobody died,” Mr. Mooney said. “Nobody lost their job. Nobody lost their savings.”

Judge Richard M. Berman interrupted him to ask, “Is the principle that if you’re rich, then the person who did the defrauding shouldn’t be punished?”

Stanley J. Okula Jr., a federal prosecutor, said it was “quite shocking” that Mr. Mooney was arguing for a different standard for those who have defrauded rich people. “Fraud is fraud,” he said. “There is no distinction in the guidelines, or in logic, for treating it differently.”

Quite right. As we all know, the law treats the rich and the poor equally. And the rich especially equally.

Tom Steyer’s latest project will help climate change’s victims

Tom Steyer’s latest project will help climate change’s victims

Coconino National Forest

The Climate Disaster Relief Fund won’t extinguish the wildfires ravaging America’s tinder-dry west, but it may help some of the victims of the fires rebuild their charred lives. And, as the fund grows in the coming years, it should help other victims of global warming.

The new fund was launched Friday with a $2 million donation from billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer and his wife Kat Taylor. It will provide grants to organizations in the U.S. that help people affected by droughts, floods, other severe weather events linked to climate change. (It’s totally separate from Steyer’s NextGen Climate Action super PAC, which is channeling tens of millions to support climate-friendly candidates in this year’s elections.)

“Those affected by the 2013 wildfire season have already felt the devastating impacts of climate change,” Steyer said in a statement, “and while the Climate Disaster Relief Fund will help with their recovery efforts, we must act now to prevent future climate-related disasters.”

Last year, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) accused Steyer of hypocrisy for opposing the Keystone XL pipeline while having made money from investments in oil-pipeline builder Kinder Morgan. Steyer responded by saying that his portfolio was being divested of dirty-energy stocks and that he would donate all personal profits from those investments to climate victims. With this new fund, he fulfills his pledge.

Steyer made his own challenge to Vitter: “I challenge you to divest yourself of any tainted financial benefits by contributing the $1,135,792.00 your campaigns for federal office have received from the fossil fuel industry to a charitable community cause of your choice in Louisiana,” Steyer wrote in an open letter last year. “I suggest supporting the victims of the BP oil spill, the continuing efforts to support the state’s recovery from the extreme weather of Hurricane Katrina, or those hard working Louisiana citizens economically impacted by the Mississippi River drought last year.”

No word yet on whether Vitter plans to follow Steyer’s lead. We’re guessing not.

Quote of the Day: Billionaires Insist that Billionaire-Friendly Policies Don’t Actually Benefit Billionaires

Mother Jones

Americans for Prosperity, the Koch-fueled super-PAC, is doubling down this year after its failure to move the needle much in 2012. Politico’s Kenneth Vogel got hold of an internal strategy memo that outlines what they think went wrong in the last election:

To remedy the messaging disadvantage, AFP developed “a sophisticated new media message-testing strategy to target specific demographics in specific locations we need to move on our issues,” according to the memo….“If the presidential election told us anything, it’s that Americans place a great importance on taking care of those in need and avoiding harm to the weak,” reads the AFP memo….“We consistently see that Americans in general are concerned that free-market policy — and its advocates — benefit the rich and powerful more than the most vulnerable of society….We must correct this misconception.”

And what better way to correct this misconception than to collect hundreds of millions of dollars from America’s crankiest right-wing billionaires in order to fund the election of people dedicated to slashing every possible program that protects the weak and takes care of those in need? It’s hard to understand why America’s poor and working class are so obstinately misguided about what America’s moneyed class really wants.
