The One Issue Republicans and Democrats Can Agree On

Ethanol is insane, and politicians outside the Beltway are finally fighting it. keeva999/Flickr While recent Supreme Court rulings on voting rights and same-sex marriage have held the nation’s attention, another decision slipped under the radar. In late June, the Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program to raise the maximum ethanol content of gasoline from 10 to 15 percent, thus clearing the way for more ethanol production. The Senate’s version of the Farm Bill, meanwhile, includes more than $1 billion of support for the ethanol industry. While these developments at the federal level are bullish for ethanol, many states are calling bull. The fact that most ethanol is made from corn means that an increase in the ethanol content of gas could create, or exacerbate, a variety of problems, like higher food prices and elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Ethanol production has also been linked to the spread of a dangerous form of E. coli. To keep reading, click here. Today, the American Petroleum Institute gathered reporters on a conference call to try and escape blame for what are sure to be record-high gas prices this summer. And while this event was full of API’s typical misdirection, one particular claim stood out to us – that compliance with the Renewable Fuel Standard will cause gasoline prices to increase by 30 percent in 2015. This could not be further from the truth.

The RFS and its associated “RIN credits” have not been a factor in higher retail gasoline prices, according to a new analysis conducted by Informa Economics, Inc. In fact, the study found ethanol costs significantly less than gasoline at the wholesale level and is reducing pump prices for consumers across the country.

Underlying API’s claims about the RFS is the idea that there’s a “blend wall” preventing the wider adoption of E15 renewable fuel (which happens to be the DoE’s most extensively tested fuel, ever). Back when the RFS was first passed, oil companies who supported the law effectively pledged to invest in the infrastructure necessary to bring E15 to our gas pumps. But now that they see renewable fuel as viable competition, they’ve done everything in their power to prevent its adoption. That means engaging in frivolous lawsuits, fabricating safety concerns about E15 and discouraging franchisees from carrying the fuel.

The oil companies don’t want to blend more renewable fuel into gasoline because it hurts their bottom line. In fact, it cost them (and saved you) $50 billion in 2012, so it’s no surprise they’re doing what they can to squash the competition. So who benefits from renewable fuel? You do, in the form of lower gas prices, reduced carbon emissions and increased national security. The choice should be clear.

Obama Campaign Launches Plan to Shame Climate Sceptics in Congress

Campaign group Organizing for Action says it is time to call out US politicians who deny the science behind climate change. Mundoo/Flickr The campaign group formed to support Barack Obama‘s political agenda has launched an initiative to shame members of Congress who deny the science behind climate change. In an email to supporters on Thursday, Organizing for Action said it was time to call out members of Congress who deny the existence of climate change, saying they had blocked efforts to avoid its most catastrophic consequences. The email linked to a video mocking Republicans who reject the science on climate change. “Right now, way too many lawmakers in Washington flat-out refuse to face the facts when it comes to climate change,” Jon Carson, executive director of Organizing for Action wrote in the email. “We’re never going to make real progress on this issue unless members of Congress get serious.” To keep reading, click here. Are Fuel Exports Driving Up the Price of Gas?

green4us

Yes, they probably are. But here’s why that’s OK. raindog/Flickr The U.S. fossil fuel renaissance has sparked job booms in the oil fields of North Dakota and Texas, shrunk our national import tab, and led to a whole lot of talk about energy independence. But, as BloombergBusinessweek noted recently, one thing it hasn’t done is lower the price of gasoline for American motorists, who are still paying $3.71 a gallon. Why not? There are a lot of ways to answer that question, the simplest being that despite all our drilling, oil is remains expensive. Worldwide, demand still beats supply. And since the cost of crude accounts for 72 percent of the cost of gasoline,* pump prices have stayed high. But that doesn’t quite put the issue to bed. After all, Americans are driving and fueling up less, which should theoretically encourage the oil refiners that produce our gasoline and diesel to cut their prices. Businessweek points to a few reasons why that hasn’t happened, but I want to focus on just one of them: exports. To keep reading, click here.
