Scott Brown Urged GOP Senators To Kill Jeanne Shaheen’s Energy Efficiency Bill

green4us

The 2014 campaign is already hurting the climate. Jim Cole/AP New Hampshire Senate candidate Scott Brown called Senate Republican leadership to urge them to stop a bipartisan energy efficiency bill, so as not to give Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), the bill’s Democratic sponsor and his Democratic opponent, something to run on. The Huffington Post first reported on Tuesday that Brown, a former senator from Massachusetts, lobbied against the bill as recently as last week. The Shaheen-Portman bill failed to clear a procedural hurdle Monday despite enjoying broad bipartisan support. Although the legislation had 14 co-sponsors — seven from each side of the aisle — just two other Republicans ultimately voted with Sen. Rob Portman (Ohio) to end debate on the measure: Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and Susan Collins (Maine). A spokeswoman for Brown, who did not return HuffPost’s request for comment, did not deny the report in a statement to Politico. “Scott Brown was concerned that Senator Shaheen was refusing to allow a vote on the Keystone pipeline, a commonsense and bipartisan project that would immediately create thousands of jobs and lessen our dependence on foreign oil,” spokeswoman Elizabeth Guyton said. Brown is running in the New Hampshire GOP primary, set for Sept. 9, for the opportunity to challenge Shaheen in November. Read the rest at The Huffington Post.

That Amazing ‘Solar Roadways’ Project Has a Working Prototype

Roads? Where we’re going, we need solar roads. Concept rendering by Sam Cornett/Indiegogo Four years ago, Scott and Julie Brusaw announced their provocative concept of “Solar Roadways,” a system of modular solar panels that could be paved directly onto roads, parking lots, driveways, bike paths, “literally any surface under the sun.” Since then, the Brusaws have received two rounds of funding from the Federal Highway Administration as well as a private grant to develop their project. They now have a working prototype featuring hexagonal panels that cover a 12-by-36-foot parking lot. In addition to the potential to power nearby homes, businesses, and electric vehicles, the panels also have heating elements for convenient snow and ice removal, as well as LEDs that can make road signage. According to the Brusaws’ calculations, Solar Roadways, if installed nationwide, could generate over three times the electricity currently used in the United States. Republicans Portray Obama Climate Push As A Distraction

Three members of the Senate’s GOP leadership were not impressed, suggesting Obama was wasting time and effort. Gage Skidmore/Flickr WASHINGTON — Republican leaders in the Senate portrayed President Barack Obama’s push to highlight the devastating impacts of climate change this week as a distraction from issues that are more important to them, and, they argued, to Americans. The Obama administration released its mammoth National Climate Assessment on Tuesday, finding that climate change is already wreaking havoc across the country, and that it will get worse. At the same time, Obama himself met with weather forecasters at the White House to focus attention on the issue. Three members of the Senate’s GOP leadership were not impressed, suggesting Obama was wasting time and effort. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) put the threats of a warming planet on par with reports of botched care at the Veterans Administration. “I wish the White House, instead of traveling around the country talking about the urgency of climate change, would talk with equal urgency about this failure of leadership and confidence at the VA,” said Cornyn, speaking at the leaders’ weekly press conference. Advanced biofuels grow the economy, lower gas prices and benefit the environment

Posted 8 April 2014 in

National

Today, the Senate Agriculture Committee held a hearing to examine the status of advanced biofuels in the US. The message was clear: advanced biofuels grow the economy, lower gas prices and are good for the environment – and we need the RFS to keep it that way.

“We’ve heard for years that advanced biofuels are just around the corner. Well, we’re here. We’re at the point where it’s actually happening,” said Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).

Jan Koninckx, the Global Business Director for Biorefineries at DuPont Industrial Biosciences reiterated this sentiment:

Koninckx went on to talk about the importance of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to the continued growth of advanced fuels, saying, “the bottom line here is that driven by the RFS, we have completely re-imagined how we fuel our planet. We do so with renewable resources without adding any additional CO2 into the atmosphere. It is a remarkable achievement. And when you look at this from the perspective of a science company – this has actually gone quite fast.”

The idea that advanced biofuels have arrived and that the RFS has been crucial in their development, and that a strong RFS is crucial to their future, is an idea shared by all of the witnesses.

Senator Stabenow further reiterated what the witnesses had shared by saying “Now we need to provide certainty through a strong Renewable Fuel Standard.”

The debate over of how strong the RFS should be boils down to a simple question: Do we want a future with more advanced biofuel, which will provide economic and environmental benefits for us all, or do we want to become more reliant on oil and deal with the consequences of expensive fuel that degrades our earth more and more with each passing day?

Let’s protect the RFS.

Step right up, Big Coal, for America’s Big Coal Giveaway

It’s bad enough that the federal government leases out public lands to private companies to be torn up and mined for coal. Even worse is that the feds are ripping off taxpayers in the process, leasing the coal tracts at way-below-market prices, through a totally inept program, according to a new federal study.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has leased 107 coal-laden tracts of land to mining companies since 1990, recently generating about $1 billion a year for federal coffers. Coal mining on federal land accounts for two-fifths of the 1 billion tons of coal mined every year in the U.S. Less coal is being burned in the U.S. these days, but it still produces about 40 percent of the nation’s electricity. Meanwhile, coal exports are growing.

Auctions for the coal-tract leases attract few bidders, and a new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office is the latest reminder that the feds are selling the public short by accepting lowball offers.

Of the 107 coal-tract leases, 96 were sold to the only bidder — often to a company that was already mining for coal nearby:

GAO

The government is under no obligation to accept the lowball bids, but it appears to be doing so anyway because of systemic failures within BLM to properly estimate fair market value. The GAO found that some bureau offices failed to follow procedures, seek independent advice, or consider future market conditions when estimating market value. And when the bureau sold America’s assets at fire-sale prices, it “did not consistently document the rationale for accepting bids that were initially below the fair market value,” according to the report.

“Taxpayers are likely losing out so that coal companies can reap a windfall,” said Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who asked the GAO to conduct the study. Markey’s office estimates that hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars may have been lost to coal companies through these bargain leases.

Following publication of the GAO report on Tuesday, Markey and environmentalists called on the federal government to suspend new coal leases until it can be sure it will get fair prices for them.

Of course, it would be even better for the U.S. to stop coal mining on federal land entirely — something that President Obama might consider were he to take his own rhetoric about climate change seriously.

On that note, here’s how Rolling Stone describes the administration’s muddled coal policy in a must-read article titled “How the U.S. Exports Global Warming”:

With the freefall in domestic [coal] demand, industry giants like Peabody are desperate to turn American coal into a global export — targeting booming Asian economies that are powering their growth with dirty fuel. China now consumes nearly as much coal as the rest of the world combined, and its demand is projected to grow by nearly 40 percent by the end of the decade. “China’s demand,” according to William Durbin, head of global markets for the energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, “will almost single-handedly propel the growth of coal.”

Since Obama took office, American coal exports are up more than 50 percent. … [T]he administration opened up more than 300 million tons of coal in the Powder River Basin to bidding by the coal companies last year. The coal is on government land; it belongs to the public. Yet the leasing practices of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are so flawed that one independent study estimates that taxpayers have been fleeced of $30 billion over the past three decades. In the past, that stealth subsidy to Big Coal at least helped create cheap power for American homes and businesses. Today, the administration has put American taxpayers in the position of subsidizing coal destined to fuel the growth of our nation’s fiercest, and carbon-filthiest, economic rival.

In an era of climatic craziness and growing clean energy capacity, the last thing Americans should be subsidizing is coal mining.
