Al Gore: Gutless media caves to climate deniers

Al Gore: Gutless media caves to climate deniers

CGIAR Climate

Al Gore

Should the media be giving as much ink to fossil fuel-funded shills as it gives to the hundreds of climate scientists who collaborated on reports being published by the United Nations?

As coverage of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s latest assessment report reaches fever pitch, some mainstream media outlets are treating climate science as if it were just an abstract political debate. They are falling into the trap of treating it as a mind-numbing to-and-fro argument with no right and no wrong — instead of something produced through good old-fashioned scientific rigor.

That pisses a lot of people off. One of them is Al Gore.

Gore, the former vice president who should have been president but instead used Powerpoint to put climate change on a lot of regular folks’ radars, is not shy about using his outsized soapbox. He was blunt in sharing his reflections Friday during a talk at the Brookings Institution. Here are some choice quotes, as transcribed by The Hill:

“Here in the U.S., the news media has been intimidated, frightened, and not only frightened, they are vulnerable to distorted news judgments because the line separating news and entertainment has long since been crossed, and ratings have a big influence on the selection of stories that are put on the news.”

“And the deniers of the climate crisis, quite a few of them paid by the large fossil fuel polluters — really it is like a family with an alcoholic father who flies into a rage if anyone mentions alcohol, and so the rest of the family decides to keep the peace by never mentioning the elephant in the room. And many in the news media are exactly in that position.”

“They get swarmed by these deniers online and in letters and pickets and all that if they even mention the word climate, and so they very timidly, they get frightened and they are afraid to mention the word climate.”

“Their purpose is to condition thinking and to prevent the consideration of a price on carbon. It’s just that simple.”

That simplicity is worth keeping in mind the next time you encounter a media outlet playing the old “on the one hand, on the other hand” game with climate science.

50 Years After Its Discovery, Acid Rain Has Lessons for Climate Change

Mary Terriberry/Shutterstock In the 1980s, the dying red spruce trees of New England—many of them taller than eight-story buildings and more than three centuries old—furnished frightening proof of the power of acid rain. The trees were seen as a canary in the coal mine, and it was easy to imagine the ensuing consequences for the forest at large. “Half the red spruce… are dead,” Dudley Clendinen wrote for The New York Times from New Hampshire in 1983. “Some of the balsam fir are beginning to look sick. Sugar maples have fallen, as have beech trees, and Dr. Richard M. Klein, one of the two directors of the university’s research project, worries that with spring, they may find that ash trees are down on the mountain, too.” The prospect of dead forests galvanized Americans and their representatives. In 1990, Congress amended the Clean Air Act to include the Acid Rain Program. The impact on the targeted pollutants, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power generation, was remarkable. Between 1995 and 2011, emissions of sulfur dioxide fell by 64 percent; nitrogen oxides by 67 percent. To keep reading, click here. The Unexpected Benefits of Life’s Difficulties, Setbacks, and Imperfections

Norman E Rosenthal M.D.

Genre: Self-Improvement

Price: $14.99

Publish Date: August 29, 2013

Publisher: Penguin Group US

The noted research psychiatrist explores how life's disappointments and difficulties provide us with the lessons we need to become better, bigger, and more resilient human beings. Adversity is an irreducible fact of life. Although we can and should learn from all experiences, both positive and negative, bestselling author Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, believes that adversity is by far the best teacher most of us will ever encounter. Whether the adversity one experiences is the result of poor decision-making, a desire to test one’s mettle, or plain bad luck, Rosenthal believes life’s most important lessons—from the value of family to the importance of occasionally cutting corners—can be best learned from it. Running counter to society’s current prevailing message that “excellence” must always be aspired to, and failure or mistakes of any sort are to be avoided at all costs, Rosenthal shows that engaging with our own failures and defeats is one of the only ways we are able to live authentic and meaningful lives, and that each different type of adversity carries its own challenges and has the potential to yield its own form of wisdom. Using stories from his own life—including his childhood in apartheid-era South Africa, his years after suffering a violent attack from a stranger, and his career as a psychiatrist—as well as case studies and discussions with well-known figures like Viktor Frankl and David Lynch, Rosenthal shows that true innovation, emotional resilience, wisdom, and dignity can only come from confronting and understanding the adversity we have experienced. Even when life is hardest, there are meanings to be found, riches to be harvested, and gifts that can last a lifetime. Rosenthal illustrates his message through a series of compact, memorable chapters, each one drawn from episodes in the lives of his patients, colleagues, or himself, and concluded with a take-away maxim on the lesson learned.

Price: $10.99

Publish Date: August 20, 2013

Publisher: Random House Publishing Group

In 2011, Novak Djokovic had what sportswriters called the greatest single season ever by a professional tennis player: He won ten titles, three Grand Slams, and forty-three consecutive matches. Remarkably, less than two years earlier, this champion could barely complete a tournament. How did a player once plagued by aches, breathing difficulties, and injuries on the court suddenly become the #1 ranked tennis player in the world? The answer is astonishing: He changed what he ate. In Serve to Win, Djokovic recounts how he survived the bombing of Belgrade, Serbia, rising from a war-torn childhood to the top tier of his sport. Then he reveals the diet that transformed his health and pushed him to the pinnacle. While Djokovic loved and craved bread and pasta, and especially the pizza at his family’s restaurant, his body simply couldn’t process wheat. Eliminating gluten—the protein found in wheat—made him feel instantly better, lighter, clearer, and quicker. As he continued to research and refine his diet, his health issues disappeared, extra pounds dropped away, and his improved physical health and mental focus allowed him to achieve his two childhood dreams: to win Wimbledon, and to become the #1 ranked tennis player in the world. Now Djokovic has created a blueprint for remaking your body and your life in just fourteen days. With weekly menus, mindful eating tips for optimal digestion, and delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes, you’ll be well on your way to shedding extra weight and finding your way to a better you. Djokovic also offers tips for eliminating stress and simple exercises to get you revved up and moving, the very same ones he does before each match. You don’t need to be a superstar athlete to start living and feeling better. With Serve to Win, a trimmer, stronger, healthier you is just two weeks away. From the Hardcover edition.

White House Announces the Return of Solar Panels

In 2010, the Obama administration pledged that it would show the president’s commitment to renewable energy by putting solar panels on the White House. This week, Obama made good on the promise, as construction workers began putting the panels in place.

A White House official confirmed to The Washington Post that the project was in process and said it was “part of an energy retrofit” to improve the efficiency of the building.

The official, who has asked for anonymity, says that the solar panels will pay for themselves in eight years through energy savings. Furthermore, the installation will show the value of retrofitting older buildings — even historic ones — and creating more energy-efficient buildings.

Solar panels had previously been installed on the roof of the White House during Jimmy Carter’s presidency and were used to provide hot water to the building. They were removed in 1986 by former President Ronald Reagan. During George W. Bush’s presidency, two solar thermal units and a photovoltaic system were installed on a maintenance building to heat the White House swimming pool.

It is not yet clear how many solar panels are being installed or how they will be used. Obama previously had pledged to installing 20 to 50 solar panels.

The installation of solar panels is one of several measures taken to increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, according to the The Washington Post, based on a plan outlined by the president and signed into an executive order in October 2009. Other measures have included doubling the number of hybrid cars and trucks in the federal fleet, increasing the government’s use of renewable energy and cutting the government’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The White House’s announcement comes just days after a report released earlier this week by the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory indicates that the price to install solar panels has fallen to an all-time low.

Finding Superior Options For Organic Baby Clothes

Lacking an option for quality organic baby clothes can find you forced to compromise on your future purchases. Dealing with garments that have been poorly constructed, or materials and manufacturing processes that are less desirable can be very disappointing. The right retail options can be found that will be able to satisfy all of your needs with much less effort.

Clothing that has been created in ways and methods that make use of unsafe labor practices, harmful harvesting of natural resources and any other practices that you are concerned with would be a poor investment. Finding a better alternative means that you will not spend your money supporting such manufacturing practices. Smarter shopping can be a vital concern.

Products that have been manufactured using a safer range of more natural materials will alleviate any concern you may have about them being in such close contact to young children and infants. Unsafe and illegal manufacturing of garments can be a real concern for those investing in new clothing. Ensuring that your products have been created safely, and with natural materials can be a real concern.

Options can be quite limited when you choose to do business with mainstream retailers. Even the outlets that carry a wide selection of clothing and garments designed for infants may be unable to provide you with the options you are most interested in. Dealing with a seller who specializes in such concerns will provide you with greater selection and options to make use of.

With the right retail purchases available, clothing and providing for your children may be done in the best ways possible. Having to compromise your shopping habits due to a poor selection of options to make use of could be very unfortunate. Knowing where to find a range of superior options will allow you to make wiser and more effective investments each time you make purchases.

Knowing where to find the best retail options could be key to the entire process. Choosing to do business with the right professionals will allow you to make use of an expanded inventory and the highest quality products available. Cost-effective resources that will provide you with the clothing that you have been searching for will allow you to more easily find the items you seek.

Searching though an online storehouse might be a lot easier than shopping in person. A faster and more effective way to make your purchases can be found, and all without ever having to leave your home. Purchasing natural high quality clothing and garments online provides you with the easiest means to provide for your children, ensuring that your shopping efforts will meet with success.

Dealers who can offer superior options for organic baby clothes are where you should concentrate your efforts. Shopping for the right garments can be done more quickly and successfully by those who have access to the right retailers. A better way to meet all of your needs would be well worth investigating, as such efforts may allow you greater opportunity to make the most beneficial of purchases in your efforts to assemble a wardrobe for your child.
