Antarctic researchers rescued following icy ordeal

Antarctic researchers rescued following icy ordeal

M R

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy in happier times.

A team of Antarctic researchers was rescued after spending nine days “stuck,” as one of the scientists put it, “in our own experiment.”

Members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition were among 52 passengers aboard the MV Akademik Shokalskiy when it became trapped in sea ice on Dec. 24. Rescue efforts were thwarted for more than a week by bad weather, but on Thursday the scientists and tourists were finally airlifted by a Chinese helicopter to the safety of an Australian icebreaker:

The scientists had planned to study how the melting of B09B, one of the world’s biggest icebergs, is triggering a buildup in surrounding sea ice and altering deep ocean currents.

“We followed Sir Douglas Mawson‘s footsteps into Commonwealth Bay, and are now ourselves trapped by ice surrounding our ship,” wrote scientists Chris Turney in a statement.

Even while international teams scrambled to rescue the crew, the fossil fuel industry’s henchmen delighted in the scientists’ predicament, excitedly pointing to the emergency as a reminder that ice still exists in cold places. (And, yes, sea ice around Antarctica is expanding even as glaciers, the Arctic, and other parts of Antarctica melt, pushing up sea levels and altering worldwide weather patterns — confusing though that might be for those who do not try to understand science.)

Despite their plight and right-wing media mockery, the researchers celebrated in style on New Year’s Eve. A video shows them in high spirits, laughing and singing about ”having fun doing science in Antarctica,” even as they lamented the “bloody great shame” of being stuck there:

Agence France-Presse reports on their makeshift New Year’s Eve party:

“It was rather amazing actually,” [Turney] told AFP via Skype from his remote location. “We set this tent up on top of the deck. It was very cosy. There was a lot of excitement.

“It was just what the team needed, letting their hair down for a bit and forgetting about their worries and concerns.”

He said those onboard were keeping busy — either continuing to pack up the scientific equipment on the boat or taking part in seminars ranging from sewing to salsa dancing and reflecting the skills of those trapped on the vessel.

Now that the 52 passengers have been rescued, things will get even lonelier for the 22 crew members aboard — they are planning on staying with the vessel in hopes that the ice around it will eventually break up naturally.

Pussy Riot and Arctic 30 "Hooligans" to be Released from Russian Prison

Mother Jones

The two jailed members of the punk band Pussy Riot are set to be released from prison following an amnesty bill passed by the Russian parliament last night. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were convicted of “hooliganism” and sentenced to two years in prison after they staged a protest against Putin and the Russian Orthodox church last year.

Also likely to be released are the members of the “Arctic 30,” a group of Greenpeace activists who staged a protest against drilling in the Arctic by boarding a Russian oil rig in September. The activists have spent two months in jail under charges of hooliganism. Peter Wilcox, the American captain of the Greenpeace ship that was raided by Russian authorities, says that while he’s happy to be going home, “I should never have been charged and jailed in the first place.”

The passage of the amnesty bill comes amid growing scrutiny of the Putin administration’s crack-down on gay rights. In June, Putin signed into law a bill banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors.” President Obama announced Tuesday that he and Michelle Obama will not be attended the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Russia this February. Instead, Obama will be sending delegates: Tennis champion Billie Jean King and ice hockey medalist Caitlin Cahow, both of whom are openly gay.

Greenpeace activist Sini Saarela, soon to be free.

They’re not pirates. They’re not hooligans. The Arctic 30, an international group of Greenpeace activists and journalists arrested in September at an offshore oil platform in Russia’s Arctic waters, are no longer accused criminals.

Charges against all members of the group are being dropped by Russia, and the 26 non-Russians among them will be free to return to their homelands.

Russia’s parliament on Wednesday approved by a 446-0 vote an amnesty that’s expected to affect thousands of prisoners and accused criminals, also including the two jailed members of Pussy Riot. The amnesty coincides with the 20th anniversary of Russia’s constitution and with the lead-up to the Winter Olympics Games, which Russia is hosting in February. Al Jazeera explains:

The initial bill listed hooliganism and mass riot charges, but said that only convicts can seek amnesty. The parliament then passed amendments stipulating that cases on those charges be closed even before reaching trial or verdict.

The amendments effectively meant that prosecution of the entire Greenpeace crew arrested after a protest in the Barents Sea and charged with hooliganism would end and the foreigners now staying in St Petersburg could finally go home.

The members of the Arctic 30 had faced up to seven years in jail if convicted of the crime of hooliganism. They had been initially charged as pirates, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

“I might soon be going home to my family, but I should never have been charged and jailed in the first place,” said Peter Willcox, the American captain of Greenpeace’s vessel. “We sailed north to bear witness to a profound environmental threat but our ship was stormed by masked men wielding knives and guns. Now it’s nearly over and we may soon be truly free, but there’s no amnesty for the Arctic. We may soon be home, but the Arctic remains a fragile global treasure under assault by oil companies and the rising temperatures they’re driving. We went there to protest against this madness. We were never the criminals here.”

US Navy Predicts Summer Ice Free Arctic by 2016

Is conventional modelling out of pace with speed and abruptness of global warming? Incredible Arctic/Shutterstock An ongoing US Department of Energy-backed research project led by a US Navy scientist predicts that the Arctic could lose its summer sea ice cover as early as 2016 – 84 years ahead of conventional model projections. The project, based out of the US Naval Postgraduate School‘s Department of Oceanography, uses complex modelling techniques that make its projections more accurate than others. Why Congress Needs to Extend the Wind Energy Tax Credit

green4us

The wind energy industry and environmental groups are calling on Congress to renew the credit. ali_pk/Flickr The wind energy production tax credit is a tougher issue than you might imagine for some good liberal wonks. On the one hand, wind power is great. On the other hand, tax credits are a market-distorting, inefficient way of making policy. They are basically spending disguised as tax cuts. Most tax credits that affect the environment — accelerated depreciation for the fossil fuel industry, the home mortgage interest deduction — incentivize sprawl, driving, and profligate dirty energy use. It is a rare, and tantalizing, point of agreement between good government advocates across party lines that we should throw out the whole system and operate a cleaner tax code. So it might be tempting, when you see Tea Party–affiliated, Koch brothers–backed groups such as Americans for Prosperity pushing to eliminate the wind energy tax credit, to say, “Hey, I agree!” Tempting but wrong. Which Hollywood-Style Climate Disasters Will Strike in Your Lifetime?

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

In a just-released report, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has taken an extensive look at the scary side, the dramatic side…let’s face it, the Hollywood side of global warming. The new research falls under the heading of “abrupt climate change”: The report examines the doomsday scenarios that have often been conjured in relation to global warming (frequently in exaggerated blockbuster films), and seeks to determine how likely they are to occur in the real world.

So here’s a list of some of the most dreaded abrupt changes (where abrupt means occurring within a period of a few decades or even years), and the probability that they’ll happen—even if nothing like the Hollywood version—before the year 2100:

20th Century Fox/Wikimedia Commons

Disruption of the Ocean’s “conveyor belt”

As Seen In: The scientifically panned 2004 blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow.

What Would Happen: The great overturning circulation of the oceans, driven by the temperature and the salt content of waters at high latitudes, transports enormous amounts of heat around the planet. If it is disrupted or comes to a halt, there could be stark changes in global weather patterns.

Chances It Will Happen This Century: Low. For future generations, however, The Day After Tomorrow might be slightly less laughable (if still wildly exaggerated). In the longer term, the NAS rates the probability of a disruption as “high.”

CBS/Wikimedia Commons

A sharp increase in extreme precipitation events

As Seen In: The over-the-top Category 7 and the even more over-the-top Sharknado.

What Would Happen: The frequency and/or intensity of extreme precipitation events—including heavy rains, damaging flooding, droughts, and hurricanes—would show a relatively sudden increase. The consequence would be not only the potential for more weather disasters and their associated costs but also, the NAS warns, the possibility of “increased conflict” following disasters. No Category 7s, but still something worth worrying about.

Chances It Will Happen This Century: According to the NAS, we can already detect a clear trend towards more extreme flooding, although trends in other extreme weather phenomena, such as droughts and hurricanes, are more murky for the moment. As for an abrupt change this century? NAS rates the outlook as “moderate.”

Extreme Sea Level Rise Due to Polar Ice Sheet Collapse

As Seen In: The 1995 Kevin Costner classic Waterworld.

What Would Happen: Here is arguably the scariest global warming scenario—the collapse of all or part of the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, leading to rapid and extreme sea level rise. (But no, the continents would not disappear as in Waterworld. Not remotely.)

Chances It Will Happen This Century: Fortunately, this risk is not likely to materialize before 2100, according to the NAS—with one possible exception, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which contains the equivalent of 3 to 4 meters of sea level rise. The NAS judges that an abrupt change here during this century is “plausible, with an unknown although probably low probability.” In the longer term, meanwhile, the probability is high that some of the great ice sheets of the planet will indeed melt substantially and drive sea level rise on a scale measured in meters, rather than inches.

Universal/Wikimedia Commons

Worse Heat Waves, More Often

As Seen In: Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (which isn’t directly about global warming, of course, but is definitely about heat).

What Would Happen: Heat waves can be devastating. Not only can they kill significant numbers of people (and spark conflict), but they also can imperil agriculture and water supplies.

Chances It Will Happen This Century: According to the NAS, a climate-related trend towards more intense and frequent heat waves has already been detected. And the outlook for an abrupt change for the worse in this century is “moderate.”

Catastrophic Methane Release from the Arctic

As Seen In: Amazingly, to our knowledge Hollywood hasn’t made use of this one yet.

What Would Happen: One oft-touted climate fear is that undersea Arctic deposits of methane hydrate will be destabilized or even explode, releasing large volumes of gas into the atmosphere that, in turn, trigger rapid global warming. This scenario is particularly frightening because methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. By worsening global warming, an Arctic methane “bomb” would also increase the risk of other dangerous abrupt climate changes.

Chances It Will Happen This Century: “Low,” says the NAS. Over the longer term, however, the risk rises to “moderate”; and when it comes to a related threat—the release of stored carbon from the thawing of northern permafrost, which would also amplify global warming—the long-term risk is “high.”

Warner Bros.

disappearing Arctic sea ice

As Seen In: The 2012 Imax film To the Arctic (yes, a documentary).

What Would Happen: The loss of summer Arctic sea ice has profound effects, ranging from opening up dramatic new opportunities for shipping and resource exploitation, to reshaping ecosystems and native cultures, to changing global weather patterns.

Chances it Will Happen This Century: The NAS considers the ongoing changes in the Arctic region to be an abrupt climate change that is already upon us. So you can watch this one in a documentary, or even in satellite images.

Polar Bear Numbers in Hudson Bay of Canada on Verge of Collapse

green4us

Climate change is warming the Arctic and melting its ice cover, with grave consequences. Hansruedi Weyrich Polar bear populations are a sensitive topic for the Canadian government, which has faced international criticism for its policies onclimate change and for allowing limited hunting of bears, mainly by indigenous communities. The Canadian environment minister provoked outrage last October when she discounted abundant scientific studies of polar bear decline across the Arctic, saying her brother, a hunter, was having no trouble finding bears. Leona Aglukkaq, an Inuk, spoke of a “debate” about the existence of climate change. “Scientists latch on to the wildlife in the north to state their case that climate change is happening and the polar bears will disappear and whatnot,” she said. “But people on the ground will say the polar bear population is quite healthy. You know, in these regions, the population has increased, in fact. Why are you [saying it’s] decreasing?” she told a meeting. “My brother is a full-time hunter who will tell you polar bear populations have increased and scientists are wrong.” Scientists dispute this. Keep reading over at The Guardian.
